Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
