Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
