Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
