Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
